Evan Mawarire

Zimbabwean Hyperinflation Survivor, Pastor, and Pro-Democracy Advocate

Evan Mawarire is a Zimbabwean pastor, survivor of hyperinflation, and advocate for freedom and justice. He is best known for founding the #ThisFlag Citizens Movement where from 2016 to 2019, he mobilized millions of people to peacefully protest the Mugabe dictatorship. For this work, he was imprisoned multiple times at the notorious Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison where he was tortured and charged with treason. Against all odds, Evan was released and eventually led the protests which peacefully toppled the 39-year-old Mugabe regime. He has held fellowships at the National Endowment for Democracy, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, Yale, and Johns Hopkins, on democracy and nonviolent movements. He speaks to audiences around the world on finding courage and starting change, and is author of Crazy Epic Courage: How A ‘Nobody’ Challenged Brutal Dictators and Moved a Nation.
